Astral World in The Lovely Bones

Peter Jackson's The Lovely Bones is a movie all about the astral worlds. Susie Salmon (Saoirse Ronan) is murdered by her neighbor George Harvey (Stanley Tucci). She assumes that her life hasn't changed, but soon realizes that the afterlife is her new home. The astral world in The Lovely Bones is a beautiful, silent world populated with past murder victims.

The astral world is also known as as the astral plane. Astral beings move about the astral world. In The Lovely Bones, Mr. Harvey's murder victims represent the astral beings. Astral projectors are capable of astral projecting to the astral plane, and well into the subplanes. The subplanes can become a terrifying world, or a mystical world with wise spirits.

The Lovely Bones depicts the astral world as a silent fantasy. It is a world we experience while lucid dreaming. Susie watches her family from within the astral world. Living humans are unable to see astral beings unless they make themselves known to the physical world. Susie visits her father as an invisible spirit, unknowingly comforting him during the mourning process.

The murder victims want to move on past the astral world. However, Susie is not ready to leave her family behind until they reach the healing process. Astral beings in the astral world are portrayed as eternal occupants. Past human spirits occupy the astral world, though they can enter Heaven. There is no real world evidence to support the descent of astral spirits beyond the astral world.

The Silent Hill movie portrays the evil of the astral world. The astral worlds in the astral horror movie are among the darkest of the subplanes. The Lovely Bones and the Silent Hill movie nonetheless show the astral world as a dimension underneath the physical plane.

The astral world in The Lovely Bones is a beautiful world. It is the world we hope to see in the afterlife. Whereas time stands still in the astral world, the dimension conveys the passing of time in the transitional phase. Heaven represents the final destination.
